About seven years ago I wrote âScarecrow.â I actually got the idea one day as I was sitting in my sonâs kindergarten class. A picture of a scarecrow loomed above me, and suddenly the thought crossed my mind: what if?
I wrote the first draft in about thirty minutes. It was the first time Iâd ever written something quite so quickly, but I already knew it was the best thing Iâd ever written. It took a few days to polish it up and then I send it out. It was accepted. Twice. And published. Twice. The first and only of my short stories to be traditionally published. Oh, I published articles and essays, a few how-toâs and some poetry before and after âScarecrowâ, but that first publication of an actual story felt so good. Iâd been dreaming of it since I was a kid writing my first âWhat do I want to be when I grow upâ essay. It felt like Iâd arrived.
So, naturally, when I started putting together my first e-Book, âScarecrowâ had to be the first story I published.
In between that first publication of âScarecrowâ and this one I had a very interesting (and not in a good way) life. A few struggles, a few educational moments, a couple of moves and a huge case of writers block. So I didnât have any new publications between âScarecrowâ and now, just a few incomplete works, and some ideas.
I did, however, have a pile of back stories. Along with âScarecrowâ I picked out two slightly creepy tales, dusted them off, polished them up, and put them in this, my first e-Book.
Of the three short stories in this volume, âSmother and Bakeâ is the oldest. I wrote it in high school and turned it in for my senior English project. My teacher gave me an A for it, and put a comment on the corner saying it was a âcreepy storyâ. Thatâs exactly what I was going for so I took it as a compliment. It did require a complete rewrite, being as old as it was. A writer always hopes to improve their craft, after all, and I have learned a lot since writing it back in high school.
âNecropolisâ was written about the same time as âScarecrowâ. I submitted it to a couple of magazines but never really got anyone who was interested before my personal life left little time for my writing life. When I pulled it out and did another edit I realized that it needed a lot of work. More of it was adding back story and fleshing out the characters.
You can find a full novel in the world of Necropolis on Amazon, Forgotten Ones.
